HCPSS Summer Meal Service Extended Through August 28, 2020

With the start of the 2020-2021 school year pushed back, HCPSS will extend its summer meal program through Friday, August 28 but LOCATIONS are changing. 

HCPSS To Offer Free Summer Meal Service, July 1-August 14, 2020

The Howard County Public School System announces its free summer food service program to meet the growing need to feed hungry children and families in Howard County and fill the nutritional gap over the summer months. Please note, some summer locations are different from the spring meals program, which ran through June 30.

The 14 meal sites will serve Grab-and-Go summer meals from July 1 through August 14, Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants will be given two meals, breakfast and lunch, for that day. Friday distributions at school-based locations only will include meals to sustain children through the weekend.

Meals will not be provided on Friday, July 3, in observance of the holiday.

Weekend meals instead will be distributed Thursday, July 2 at school locations only.

Meals will be provided to anyone age 18 and under and/or any HCPSS student, regardless of age. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. Children do not need to be present; parents/guardians may pick up meals for their child(ren). There is no application, enrollment or fees to participate in this program.

In order to offer convenience for families, while complying with government requirements, the existing procedures for meal pickup will be extended through the summer for families who may find it difficult to pick up meals for their children at the locations or times when meals are served.

The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, through the Maryland State Department of Education and is an extension of the National School Lunch Program, which is designed to guarantee eligible children free and nutritious breakfasts and lunches during the school year. Meals served will be healthy and will follow USDA nutrition guidelines.

From July 1-August 14, the 14 meal sites to distribute Grab-and-Go meals are:

• Laurel Woods Elementary School, 9250 North Laurel Road, Laurel
• Longfellow Elementary School, 5470 Hesperus Dr, Columbia (new site)
• Oakland Mills Middle School, 9540 Kilimanjaro Road, Columbia
• Swansfield Elementary School, 5610 Cedar Lane, Columbia
• Wilde Lake Middle School, 10481 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia
