Murray Messenger 2/5/19 A Note From The Principal Dear MHMS Families, During the month of February, MHMS staff and students will engage in several opportunities to uplift Black History. In recognition of Black Lives Matters At School Action Week, we are encouraging staff and students to wear black on Wednesday, February 6th. Additionally, one of our focus areas for the month will be on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). Through DEN, our students will research an HCBU and create pennants to be displayed on classroom doors. On February 15th, under the direction of BSAP Achievement Liaison, Hope Whye, along with Ms. Hersey, and Ms. Aberdeen, many of our students will share a Black History Month performance during an assembly for their classmates. As a school, we are excited to celebrate Black History Month. Sincerely, Lisa R. Smithson Principal Murray Hill Middle School Important Dates:
News From The Hill School News MAP Testing: MHMS students will engage in the winter administration of MAP during the month of February. Any student who is absent during a scheduled testing session, will have the opportunity to engage in a make-up session. Please note the schedule below:
NAEP Testing: On March 6th, a randomly selected group of 8th grade students will take the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test at MHMS. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public. These students were selected by NAEP and a notification letter was sent home with the students on January 24th. Please contact Alexia Couch, Assistant Principal and Testing Coordinator, if you have any questions or concerns about this test. MHMS Attendance: Please be reminded that if your student is absent for any reason, that it is important to provide written documentation of their absence. Documentation should include student name, the date(s) of absence, and the reason for the absence. Parents also have the choice to inform us of a student absence by sending an email to the following address: MHMSAttendance@hcpss.org Health Room Reminders: Please remind your students that if they are feeling ill during the school day, that they should report to the Health Room, so that our Health Room staff can contact home if needed, rather than texting a message home without a staff member knowing of the contact. A Reminder to Walkers: Walkers may not return home in the morning, once on school property. If they have forgotten an item (hw, lunch, materials), they will be directed to the front office to call a parent to determine a solution that both the parent and school staff are aware of. Yearbook Sales: MHMS Memory Books are on sale now! Flyers were sent home with students, so that you can secure your copy of the 2018-2019 school year! Orders can also be submitted online through ybpay.lifetouch.com using Yearbook ID Code 13198619. PTA News Box Tops for Education COMPETITION: During the month of February the grade level that collects the most Box Tops for Education will be rewarded with a special activity for the grade. Collection cans are located outside of the front office. PTA Sponsored Valentine’s Day Store: During lunch shifts on February 11th through February 13th, students will have the opportunity to purchase items priced between $1.00 and $10.00 for their friends and families. If you would like to volunteer to assist with sales, please sign up using the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090a48ada92bab9-theptas. Also, the PTA is looking for donations of plastic shopping bags for this event. STAY CONNECTED Communication is an essential component of a successful school experience for both students and parents.
